More than 100 positions will soon be open
PALMER -- It's a positive sign in Marquette County that the economy is continuing to turn around.
Just recently, the Cliffs Board of Directors approved spending capital money for the Empire Mine.
This means new equipment will be purchased including ten new haul trucks, a mining shovel, and loaders. The current maintenance facility will also have to be expanded in order to accommodate all of the new equipment. And many new jobs will become available.
"We're looking at adding somewhere in excess of 100 positions here at Michigan. We'll begin fairly actively hiring for those positions in the fourth quarter of 2010," says Cliffs spokesman Dale Hemmila.
The decision to spend capital money will also lengthen the mine's life to 2014.
