At the Delaware Copper Mine
COPPER COUNTRY -- This summer the Delaware Mine is offering visitors a glimpse at one of the Keweenaw's oldest sources for copper.
Owner Tom Poynter says they've cleared a path and are nearly ready to open a prehistoric copper pit as part of the tour at the Delaware Mine.
Poynter says he's been collecting ancient stone hammers and other artifacts from the site for years and has always wanted to show it off to the public.
"The difference between this mine and the one we show as the Delaware Copper Mine is a couple thousand years. This mining was done by hand with stone hammers and fire," said Poynter.
Poynter is using any spare time to put together a fence and set up signs for the pit.
He's hoping to have everything finished by the end of July.
