MUNISING -- The weekly summer Junior Ranger program was underway at the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Munising Thursday.
The program runs every Thursday through the end of the summer and is free to the public.
Thursday Junior Rangers learned about the natural habitats of animals. They also sang songs and collected bugs that they showed to the park rangers.
Leaders of the group say that the main objective of the program is to encourage the Junior Rangers to explore, learn more about and protect the environment.
"After years of doing this program I've discovered that kids like a couple of things when they're outside. They love to play different kinds of learning games and they also love to just explore, do some hands on stuff so you know we have things like dip nets or insect nets and we give them a chance to collect things and you know identify things and so on," said Park Education Specialist, David Kronk.
Close to 40 Junior Rangers joined in on the fun of the day.
