ISHPEMING -- The second phase of the Iron Ore Heritage trail is well on it's way to completion. This section will run through Ishpeming.
Work started late last week on the 2.2 mile section of trail. It will meet up with existing trail that runs into Negaunee.
The cost to complete this phase is $365,000 and is being paid for by MDOT and DNRE grants.
They've needed six easements from land owners and it's taken two years to get construction started.
"We see what's happening in our community, people want trails and we want trails that will connect communities and we want trails that will talk about our unique history in the United States and what the Marquette Iron Range meant to the Industrial Revolution," said Carol Fulsher from the Trail Authority.
Crews hope to be completed by the end of August.
Fulsher says they plan to start construction on the third phase next year.
