It's expected over 18 million Americans will be on the road with their RVs over the weekend
CEDAR RIVER -- Over the Independence Day weekend, it's expected over 18 million Americans will be on the road with their RVs. Well, parks and campgrounds across the U.P. are filling up and sites are going fast, and one has been booked solid for the 4th this whole week.
The Menke family from Wrightstown, WI has been coming to the U.P. every 4th of July for the past few years. It's the natural beauty that brings them back every year.
"We love the beauty of Lake Michigan, the bay of Green Bay, we love the grass, the natural trees," said camper Shelli Menke. "We like having a beach as well for the kids to play in."
All this week, JW Wells State Park in Cedar River has been filling up with campers, like the Menke family. The park's completely booked, with all 135 reservable sites occupied.
The 4th of July holiday is the busiest holiday for the park, and the campers come from all over.
"We do get about 50 percent of our guests from other states," said Unit Supervisor, Manny Valdez. "A lot of Wisconsin, a lot of Illinois folks, but a lot are from other states in the region as well."
And those who fill the sites don't just plan their holiday weekend a few days in advance.
"It is six months in advance to the day," Valdez explained. "People have it down in their planner; they know the first day they can, the morning of, six months in advance."
After this holiday weekend, the park will be getting ready for their next big weekend, which is their "Christmas in July" event on July 23.
