Council asked to take a position
MARQUETTE -- Opponents of the proposed Houghton County Justice Center, which would include a new jail and sheriff's department facility, say they won't give up their fight until the issue is resolved.
Monday night, several city residents made an appeal to the Houghton City Council.
George Dewey brought up the issue by asking the council to take a position on the $15 million facility which could potentially take up two vacant lots in central Houghton.
"The facility they're going to build is 110 beds with plans for expansion. It's very clear that they're positioning this to be regional, and I don't think the city wants a regional jail in the center of town," exclaimed Dewey.
Several opponents of the proposed Justice Center have begun meeting and established a blog about their fight called, Gardens Not Guard Towers.
