HOUGHTON -- If you think you felt the tremors from Wednesday's earthquake in Ottawa, Canada, Michigan Tech scientists say there's a good chance you're right.

Tech's seismometer recorded the 5.0 magnitude quake which is rather large for the eastern U.S. and Canada.

Geophysicist Greg Waite says their measuring station is sensitive enough to catch quakes all over the world.  Its readout shows the first rumbles beginning just after 1:40 p.m. on Wednesday and ending nearly 30 minutes later.

"The work we do has hazard implications.  Even if they're not directly focused on an earthquake hazard, the more we learn about these, the better we're able to understand how they might cause damage to people," said Greg Waite, Assistant Professor of Geophysics.

Waite says the western Quebec region should experience a number of aftershocks, gradually declining in magnitude, but none that will be felt very far from the epicenter.
