Bike racks installed on ALTRAN buses for easier trail access
MUNISING -- With beautiful landscapes surrounding the city, it's no surprise that Munising is a popular place to ride a bike.
And it may become more popular as the Downtown Development Authority and ALTRAN take steps to make the community more bikeable. One step that has been taken is by putting bike racks all over the town. But that's not all. Three bike racks have been installed on ALTRAN buses...and bicyclists will find them to be easy to use.
"Once they've been shown once, they can put their own bicycle on. The drivers do not have to assist them; they can load their own bike and it's very secure," explains ALTRAN director Rochelle Cotey.
And the town has also been participating in the Let's Get Moving challenge with St Ignace, Sault Ste. Marie, and Manistique. The six-week program has riders tally their miles biked or walked. The winning town will receive a stipend to use in the community.
"It's just getting people out and not only for the community trying to win money, but it's setting goals for themselves- personal health goals. So I think it's not only good for the community, but good for the individual," describes Community Health Educator Randy Sundell.
Many bikers are happy to see the changes, but they say there is still plenty of room to improve.
"I'd like to see more bike lanes. We have some areas that are on the dangerous side, I think, but it's becoming better and we're becoming more and more focused," says Munising biker Suzette Carberry.
And the improvements will continue to come. ALTRAN hopes to get racks installed on all 15 of their vehicles in the near future.
