IRON COUNTY -- A former clerk for the Village of Alpha entered a plea Monday in Iron County Circuit Court.

Tommie McCarthy, 37, pled guilty to embezzling between $50 and $100,000 while working as a clerk in Alpha.  He also pled guilty to charges of embezzling public money and the personal use of public funds.

He faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.

The embezzlement occurred over a two year period and was discovered following Alpha's 2009 audit.

"Did you take money that belonged to the Village of Alpha?" asked the Judge. "Yes," replied McCarthy.

"And you used it for your own use.  Is that correct?" the Judge asked.  "Yes sir," McCarthy said.

McCarthy said in court he embezzled money from the village's sewer fund.

He will be sentenced August 9 in Iron County Circuit Court.
