Camp Batawagama in Iron County is giving seniors a chance to be kids.
IRON COUNTY -- The joyous sound of campers singing probably looks a little different than you would expect. For more than three decades, Camp Batawagama in Iron County has invited senior citizens to come and be kids again.
"When we first started doing this quite a few years ago, it was a little difficult getting people here,” said Camp Batawagama Program Coordinator Bob Williams. “Once somebody showed up, they kept coming back."
More than 100 seniors took part in traditional camp activities including singing, crafting, and rafting.
The three-day senior camp is a 35 year tradition here in Iron County that seniors and staff look forward to every year. Avie Powell has been coming to senior camp for the last five years. She said once spring comes, she knows senior camp is right around the corner.
"Part of being a senior is bringing up our past and living through our children if they came to camp,” said five year camper Avie Powell. “I didn't as a child; I didn't come to this camp. Wish I would have now that I see how good it is."
The camp is community supported and with an older population, Williams said its important Camp Batawagama gives back.
"We've been doing this obviously for the seniors of Iron County,” Williams said. “They are our supporters, and we feel very strongly about maybe giving something back to them. Maybe it's time for that, isn't it?"
The three-day camp wraps up this Friday.
