Handicapped-acccessible sites being developed
BIG BAY -- The Perkins Park Campground in Big Bay is getting revamped.
The popular local camping site is in stage four of its five stage refurbishment. The entire north loop of the grounds will be updated with 31 full hook-up sites, eight electric sites, and new bathroom and office facilities.
But the camp's proudest additions...four new handicap-accessible sites and trails.
"Well, we have a lot of people who come to the park, not only in wheelchairs, but also that use walkers and just have a hard time getting around. With Bay Cliff so close, there are several times Bay Cliff comes over and uses our park," said Park Manager, Kim Bourgeois.
Refurbishments were funded by a $198,400 grant from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund.
The project should be completed in a year.
