Residents beware
KEWEENAW COUNTY -- An aggressive bear trying to get inside an Allouez Township home early Tuesday morning has the Keweenaw County Sheriff's Department reminding people to protect their property.
Sheriff Ron Lahti says the number of bear problems has been on the rise this spring, especially in the area of Five Mile Point Road.
The Sheriff says homeowners can typically keep the bears away by removing items like bird feeders, trash cans or any other food supply.
"This is the third or fourth incident this spring with a bear coming around homes. Generally, if you remove the food source, that will eliminate the problem, but in this case the bear became more aggressive and actually broke into a home to try to find a meal," said Lahti.
If a bear is unusually aggressive, you should call the Sheriff's Department or the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment for help.
