Cliffs Natural Resources employs more than 1400 people in the Upper Peninsula
PALMER -- If you know how to weld or have industrial mechanical skills, you could be looking at a new job.
Cliffs Natural Resources employs more than 1400 people in the Upper Peninsula and is looking to hire skilled crafts people for plant repair and welding positions.
"It's related to the fact that we have an aging workforce here and we're losing employees, specifically in those skill areas," says Cliffs spokesperson, Dale Hemmila.
Hemmila says the positions that are needed are difficult to fill.
"There's a high demand for people with those skills, and we'll continue to look for those. Really, how many we hire is really going to be dictated by what our needs are," Hemmila adds.

Cliffs is hiring permanent mining employees, but it's also hiring college students for the summer. Those college students are relatives of current mine employees, and they can make anywhere from $13,000 to $15,000.
"It's just a great experience, something not a lot of people have an opportunity to do in the summer," says Ferris State student, Steven Hintsala.
Cliffs will put about fifty college students on the payroll, doing everything from general labor to driving the production trucks.
"It gives you a chance to see what everyone in the community's been doing as you've been growing up, see how the process really works out here, and what also goes into it," Hintsala says.
Hiring the college students benefits both sides--the students get a chance to make money to support their education, while the mine gets replacement workers for summer vacations.
