MARQUETTE -- AAA says this year, Memorial Day weekend travelers will increase more than five percent, despite the fact gas prices are up fifty cents from last year.  But more people on the road are spending less.  AAA estimates people will be spending close to $800 this year as compared to $1,000 last year.

Marquette City Police are expecting the city population to jump 20 percent this weekend.  They're responding to more potential motorists with increased patrols and the "Click-it or ticket" campaign, which is in full force.

"There'll be enforcement zones, 'Click-it or ticket' enforcement zones, and what you'll see is big orange signs that say seatbelt enforcement zone,” said Corporal Jim Finkbeiner of the Marquette City Police.  “And you'll also see generally some type of patrol car with its lights on."

Officers say the campaign is about ensuring safe travel and reinforcing state law, which says any passenger in the front seat must be wearing a seatbelt regardless of age.

Michigan will also be listing restrictions on 121 active construction projects statewide to open up lane closures, making travel easier and more convenient for motorists.  Community leaders ask for little in return.

"Please just buckle up, put the phone down if you can,” said James Lake of MDOT, “and take a little extra caution in construction zones."
