Gunnells, Jr. was taken to Schoolcraft Memorial hospital for treatment

HIAWATHA TOWNSHIP -- A 20-year-old Appleton, Wisconsin man is recovering from a head injury he suffered after jumping off the Cope Bridge over the Indian River in Hiawatha Township Thursday night.

According to witnesses, Duane Gunnells, Jr. and Kaitlin Bauer jumped feet first into the water at 9:30 p.m. on Thursday.  Witnesses say she came up first, and when he surfaced, it looked like he was pulling her under.

An EMT fishing nearby noticed the pair in distress and threw flotation devices to them.

Gunnells, Jr. was taken to Schoolcraft Memorial hospital for treatment.  There's no word on whether he's been released.

Police say while the Cope Bridge is a popular spot to jump in the river, it's risky because of low water levels.

It's also illegal in Michigan.
