Defendant, allegedly intoxicated, fired shotgun at neighbor's apartment

HOUGHTON -- The Lake Linden man accused of firing a shotgun into his neighbor's apartment on May 7 was arraigned in Houghton County District Court Monday.

Thirty-nine-year-old Jeffrey Smith is facing one count of assault with a dangerous weapon, a felony punishable by up to four years in prison.  He's also charged with a misdemeanor, possessing a firearm while intoxicated, punishable by up to 93 days in jail.

A not guilty plea was entered on Smith's behalf for the misdemeanor count and bond was set at $1,000.

Smith will be back in court for a preliminary exam on May 21.
