Annual conference shows off the latest gadgets for teachers
MUNISING -- The role of technology in the classroom has changed drastically over the past few years. But U.P teachers got caught up on the latest gadgets at the 10th annual U.P. Educational Technology and Business conference.
"Up here in the U.P., we don't see a lot of the new technologies until it's three or four years old. So bringing it here once a year with MACUL, we're able to get teachers, that school districts maybe can't afford to have them go to state conferences, come here," explains teacher Linda Schwake.
The day was filled with sessions demonstrating technologies including Legos, Power School and videoconferencing. One of the most popular exhibits at the conference was a mobile lab which provides a strong interaction between the students and the teachers. Developers feel this lab will provide an enhanced learning experience for students.
"The mobile coach allows teachers and administrators to formally assess their classroom to dramatically improve instruction, by allowing teachers to immediately know whether or not students are understanding the material, and it allows the students to know immediately whether or not they're right," says Arlyn Boorsma of EduTek Midwest.
Teachers are excited by the new technology because it gives them so much more to work with than just a textbook.
"I use some simulations in my room, and it's a lot better learning about how to run a business by trying to do it online rather than just reading about it in a textbook. It kind of brings everything together," Schwake says.
More good news...it's not all that expensive. Many companies offer promotions to reduce the costs, and products may also be discounted through the Regional Educational Media Center of Michigan.
