The board may consider moving all the middle school students to the high school and close Phelps Middle School
ISHPEMING -- With Ishpeming voters turning down a school bond proposal Tuesday that would have expanded Birchview Elementary and closed Phelps Middle School, the district superintendent says closing a building could still happen down the road.
The board may consider moving all the middle school students to the high school and close Phelps Middle School, or move the elementary grades to the middle school, move seventh and eighth to the high school, and close Birchview Elementary.
'The board will step back from this for a little while and then come back, month by month, to look at other building options. The reality is that Ishpeming does not have enough students to support three building sites," said Stephen Pierson, Superintendent.
The superintendent says the board needs to reduce the operating budget by $400,000 for next school year.
