HOUGHTON -- The Houghton Police Department recognized three heroes at the City’s regular meeting on Monday night.

Thomas Briggs, Thomas Peterson and Houghton City Police Officer Zach Wheeler all received the Lifesaver Award for their actions in the Surplus Outlet fire last December.

Police Chief John Donnelly told the council how the three men searched the burning building to make sure all of its tenants got out safely.

The chief also thanked the five fire departments and 63 firefighters who spent hours putting out the flames.
