Coast Guard helicopter crashes into Huron

The Coast Guard says the crash happened around 9:45 p.m.

LAKE HURON -- A U.S. Coast Guard rescue helicopter conducting a nighttime training exercise crashed into southern Lake Huron Tuesday night.

The three-member crew safely escaped before the helicopter sank.

The Coast Guard says the crash happened around 9:45 p.m.; the crew was picked up by a Coast Guard boat.

Salvage operations are planned for Wednesday.
