MARQUETTE -- The early spring weather this year is inspiring many people to get outside and be active.
When running or walking, it's important to be efficient and get the most out of your stride by using the least amount of work. There are actually different methods and styles of running that will increase your efficiency when exercising.
Brian Claus, owner of Advantedge Sports in Marquette, says, "My suggestion is when you start a running program to find a flat surface, to go in the Dome or inside on the track, not on concrete, on the side of the road versus the road, you know, things like that where they're going to have more shock absorption."
He says they offer video, slow-motion analysis, and the program allows them to monitor a person's running style, as well as key elements like their stride frequency. Claus also recommendeds that you get a check-up from a physician and go through the proper warm-up and conditioning before starting any type of physical fitness program.
Claus says while form is important when running and walking for exercise, so is what's on your feet. He says the type of shoe you're wearing can make all of the difference.
John Thomsen, partner of Johnson's Sport Shop in Marquette, says, "In my view, there's basically four different types of biomechanics--biomechanics means what your foot presents when it hits the ground--and when we match you up with the proper biomechanics and then also the proper fit."
When you replace your shoes depends on how often you wear them. Manufacturers recommend every 500 miles, which should be about every six months.
