Fire spread quickly to a second house
ISHPEMING -- Fire crews from the Ishpeming City Fire Department and the Negaunee Fire Department responded to the call just before 10 a.m. this morning. It's believed that the fire was started in the kitchen of the home at 926 Second Street in Ishpeming, but when firefighters arrived, they found it was quickly spreading.
"Most of the fire was, when we arrived, was in the first level moving into the second level, and it also spread to the basement area which created some problems," explained Ishpeming City Assistant Fire Chief Jim Bertucci.
And the flames managed to spread even farther.
"The secondary house, a couple of us noticed some flames on the roof and we alerted the firefighters and they tried to knock those down, but as you can see, you can see it kept going," described Ishpeming resident Colleen Weyer.
Soon the house at 920 Second Street was also on fire which made a challenging job even harder for the firefighters, who kept running into problems.
"Just how much the fire has spread. It got into a lot of confined areas and in the attic and in the basement and such. Areas that were hard to get into," Bertucci added.
It took crews more than five hours to extinguish the blaze. No one was injured, but a few pets perished. One home is declared a total loss, but the other will be evaluated.
Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
