Candidates must turn in at least 15,000 voter signatures by mid-May
LANSING -- U.S. Representative Pete Hoekstra plans to be the first candidate to turn in the petition signatures needed to run for governor in Michigan. The Republican from Holland plans to submit the petitions to state officials Wednesday.
Candidates must turn in at least 15,000 voter signatures by mid-May to qualify to run in the August primary.
Other Republicans seeking the nomination are Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard, Attorney General Mike Cox, State Senator Tom George, and Ann Arbor business leader Rick Snyder.
Democratic hopefuls are Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero, House Speaker Andy Dillon, and State Representative Alma Wheeler Smith.
Former Republican U.S. Representative Joe Schwarz is considering running as an independent.
