BESSEMER -- An elderly Bessemer woman is recovering this morning after a fire in her apartment Thursday afternoon.

The Gogebic County Sheriff's Department says the fire started in the kitchen area of the unit located at Hillcrest Apartments.

Ninety-two-year-old Josephine Makinen was pulled from the apartment by home health care nurse Kimberly Johnson who saw the smoke.

Johnson called authorities and then went back into the home to extinguish the blaze.

Makinen suffered severe burns to her face, arms, pelvic area and chest.

It appears the fire was located near the stove.
