MARQUETTE -- The UP 200 has got kids throughout Marquette County excited in anticipation for the race.
The UP 200 mascot, Banshee, a nine-year-old Alaskan malamute, was at Lakeview Elementary School Wednesday. Students got to see tricks and hear him talk. They also saw a presentation about what goes into caring for the dogs before race day. It's also meant to encourage kids and families to come out and meet the sled dogs at the vet check on Friday.
It's the second year the owner and dog have visited schools and it's all about the fun and excitement of the race.
"That's the number one thing--it's just sharing not only experience or the understanding of the sport, but they also get to see with Banshee, because she is a much calmer dog; they get to see her in her costume and they're quite ecstatic about it," said presenter Todd Hennigan.
If you want to meet Banshee and the sled teams, you can go to the vet check which happens at 9 a.m. Friday in the Holiday Inn and Riverside parking lots.
