HOUGHTON -- The Portage Lake District Library in Houghton is reminding people to continue to think of those in need even after the holiday season.

Since the beginning of December they've been asking patrons with overdue book fines to make good by donating non-perishable food items.  In return, the library will waive up to ten dollars in fines per person.

Or for anyone who would prefer to just pay, that money will also be set aside for local food pantries.

"The response from the community has been wonderful," said community programs director Chris Alquist.   "As you can see, the box is full.  I'm going to be emptying it so we can refill it, and we're encouraging everyone to stop by and donate food, even if they have no fines."

The library will continue collecting canned goods through January.
