ALPHA -- A former village clerk from the western Upper Peninsula faces trial next month on embezzlement charges.
Former Alpha clerk Tommie McCarthy entered not guilty pleas Tuesday and waived his preliminary examination. An Iron County judge scheduled a pretrial hearing for Jan. 19.
The local paper reports McCarthy was arrested Sept. 25 in Niagara, Wisconsin following an investigation by state troopers from the Iron River post. An audit of the village's finances revealed that at least $100,000 was stolen.
McCarthy faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $50,000 fine for the felony embezzlement charge.
