ONTONAGON -- The Smurfit-Stone container mill in Ontonagon will be closings its doors. This time, for good.
In an announcement from company officials, the shutdown will become effective December 31 of this year.
The company states that the cost to operate the plant isn't providing long-term returns for the company.
One-hundred-eighty-two employees are affected by this shutdown.
"These decisions were made to ensure the company's long-term growth and profitability and do not reflect on the hard work and commitment of the employees at the Ontonagon and Missoula mills," said Steve Klinger, President and COO. "We recognize that closing facilities is always difficult on our employees, their families and the communities, and we will work with our employees, union representatives and public officials during these transitions."
Smurfit-Stone will also be closing another plant in Missoula, Montana.
