DOLLAR BAY -- Students armed with pennies and other spare change at the Dollar Bay-Tamarack City schools are helping two local students fight cancer.

All this week, the kids brought in bags filled with coins to use in their penny wars.  The point of the competition is to raise the most money in pennies while using silver change to subtract from the other classes' totals.

At the end of the week, the money will be divided and given to two young boys with Dollar Bay connections who were each recently diagnosed with cancer.

'We were lucky enough to get Dairy Queen to donate some ice cream cupcakes for the winning class, but if you talk to the kids, they've all been saying it's not who wins," said Kristen Kariainen, second grade teacher.  "We're just doing something to help others.'"

The school hopes to raise at least $1,000 this week.  And they're well on their way.

They've already raised over $850 in the elementary school alone.
