Shoeboxes are being filled with school supplies, toys, hard candies and personal necessities.
HARVEY -- Although Christmas is still more than a month away, area residents are already buying and wrapping up gifts.
Shoeboxes are being filled with school supplies, toys, hard candies and personal necessities. Once packed, they'll be delivered to children living in third world countries.
It's called Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan's Purse.
Last year, more than 1,200 shoe box gifts were collected.
"We prefer to have a plastic shoe box," explained Katherine Olson, coordinator. "You can get all the stuff at the dollar store, everything is at the dollar store. A plastic shoe box because the mothers use the shoe box after the children have taken their toys out; they use it to carry water and grain."
If you'd like to participate in Operation Christmas Child, volunteers will be accepting shoe box gifts through Saturday at Silver Creek Church in Harvey.
