Lutheran churches ban together to collect items for needy people.
ISHPEMING -- Saturday's sprinkling of snow flurries didn't slow down the members of Messiah and St. Mark's Lutheran Church.
They were hard at work loading box after box of donated quilts, school and health supplies.
The goal was to fill up a rail car for the Lutheran World Relief which works to enhance the quality of life of those living across the globe.
After packing the rail car, the donations will be sent to Baltimore, Maryland where they'll later be distributed to people in Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East.
"Little churches throughout all of the Upper Peninsula and throughout the United States, in fact, have been gathering weekly to make quilts and then getting the materials for school kits and health kits," said organizer Tim Bernard.
Last year, Lutheran churches from the U.P. donated 156 school and health kits as well as 917 quilts.
