Monday at 8 p.m. was the deadline for the incentive program.
NEGAUNEE -- The government's Cash for Clunkers program ended Monday night.
The three billion dollar program was expected to ride through Labor Day, but has burned through much of its funding.
"I'd figured we probably do like 20 or 25 cars, and when you do over 50, it's just amazing," said general manager Bob Hanson of Fox Negaunee.
Cash for Clunkers allowed consumers to trade in gas guzzlers for a rebate of up to $4,500 towards the purchase of a new vehicle, which has helped dealerships move some inventory.
At Fox Negaunee, the lot is normally stocked with 135 new cars; as of Monday afternoon, they were down to less than 20.
According to the Department of Transportation, Cash for Clunkers has generated nearly a half-million deals, and the final numbers won't be in until later this week.
Fox Negaunee saw a last-minute rush of consumers over the weekend. On Saturday, they sold 12 cars.
"The other thing that surprised me is we did sell a lot of pickups," Hanson said. "I figured it would be mostly small cars, which it was, but we did sell a lot of trucks, too."
But the new sales have left dealerships busy filling out paperwork for reimbursement by the government, which must be completed and submitted by noon Tuesday.
Fox Negaunee so far has received 20 percent of what they're owed. Now, they're waiting for the rest.
It's a bit of a hassle, but for Fox Negaunee, the sales were well worth it.
