Distinguished Alumni gallery unveiled
CALUMET -- More than 100 people gathered at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge in Copper Harbor this afternoon to honor five new inductees at the Calumet and Sacred Heart High Schools’ Distinguished Alumni Luncheon.
Gene Arntsen is being honored for his career in the lumber industry and his generous support of the community.
“Whether you’re a doctor, lawyer, or forester, no matter what field you’re in you can always contribute,” says Arntsen.
The Distinguished Alumni Awards were first given out in 2003.
Selection Committee Chair Gene LaRochelle says the recipients' achievements reflect on the community as well.
“When we honor them, we honor ourselves because this is our community, and by holding these people up as examples of people we admire, it tells us something about them, but it tells about us also,” says LaRochelle.
Earlier this morning, a few previous inductees were on hand as a gallery featuring all 36 of the Distinguished Alumni was unveiled.
“This is only the tip of the iceberg, the number you see up there. This community has produced a lot of fine people and a lot of people that have been very, very successful in their careers,” says Don Poshak, a 2003 Distinguished Alumna.
The five newest faces should be added to the wall within the next two weeks. Organizers hope the display will be a source of inspiration for students as they being a new school year.
