CHOCOLAY TOWNSHIP -- Kindergarteners and senior citizens will receive smoke detectors free of charge, thanks to the Negaunee City Fire Department Golf Tournament.

The fund-raiser is a four-person scramble.  A total of 12 teams hit the greens swinging Saturday afternoon at Gentz's Homestead Golf Course.

The money the participants pay to play goes toward buying smoke detectors, which are given out during Fire Prevention Week.

Last year, 150 smoke detectors were given out to kindergarten students at Lakeview Elementary in Negaunee.

"It's really important for the children to bring them home and have their parents put them in," said firefighter Cubby Nelson.  "A lot of them fail to do that; you would be surprised of how many people do not have smoke detectors in their homes."

The event usually brings in up to $700 for the purchase of smoke detectors.
