The saw mill hopes that by installing this new 400,000 dollar piece of equipment now, during this slow period, it will help them be ready when economic conditions improve. But before that, they're hoping they see improvements in the housing industry, where most of their timber products are used.

The rain, for now has cleared here in Baraga. I just got done talking with mill officials who say it's a tough time to be in the timber industry. Demand for their products has decreased by 50 percent since September.
But they're trying to take advantage of this slow period to make some major upgrades.
I'll have more on that coming up.

Boy, it's a cold and rainy day here in Marquette. I just returned from a little vacation in Florida where it was hot and rainy, but I had fun no matter what the weather.
Back to reality. Today I'm headed to Baraga and a lumber mill. The Baraga Lumber Division of Besse Forest Products is making some major improvements. While other businesses are shrinking, the mill plans to increase production by 25 percent.
We'll talk to those at the mill to find out why they're expanding in these tough economic times.
I'll have another update later.
