Removing the charred remains of the Labor Day weekend fire is a tough job.
ONTONAGON -- It's been almost eight months since a Labor Day weekend fire destroyed seven buildings in downtown Ontonagon.
Clean-up of the charred remains just recently began. Village officials say it took time to work everything out with the property owners' insurance carriers.
All but three building owners had insurance. Officials say those without have made other arrangements to pay for the clean-up.
Although officials would like to see the businesses rebuild, there has been no word on what's next for the land.
"At this point in time, it's their (building owners') decision," commented Ontonagon Village Manager Tom Cogswell. "We probably will be focusing on that next aspect, once we do get the rubble removed and everything cleaned up, so we can put this behind us."
Clean-up should take another couple of days, then it will be backfilled and grass will be planted.
