Brenda Lindeblad could face up to 10 years in prison.
MUNISING -- The longtime president of a non-profit in Alger County stood trial Thursday for embezzlement charges.
Brenda Lindeblad, who was arrested earlier this month for allegedly embezzling thousands of dollars from the Shingleton Recreational Club, had a preliminary trial in Alger County District Court Thursday morning.
Prosecutor Karen Bahrman called several witnesses to the stand to testify, one of whom stated she became suspicious when Lindblad began paying for club activities using personal checks.
"Transactions should always be made out of the SRC checking account. That's how we keep records. So spending cash out of a personal checking account, for one; it doesn't give us any proof of what we've spent. There's no record of what we've spent," said SRC Secretary Heather Seymour.
The defense, however, made clear that with only Lindeblad and the treasurer responsible for the organization's finances, they were the only ones certain of its expenses.
Lindeblad's case, which is a felony punishable up to 10 years in prison, was bound over to Circuit Court, and she will be arraigned on March 2.
