Catholic schools help others.
IRON MOUNTAIN -- Students at the Dickinson Area Catholic School are learning more than reading, writing and arithmetic this week. Sunday marked the beginning of the 36th annual National Catholic Schools Week and this year, students are giving back to their communities. The theme of this year's Catholic Schools Week is celebrating service in the school, the community and the nation.
The first project for the DACS students this week was putting together birthday baskets, which contain everything you need to throw a birthday bash. The baskets aren't just for fun, however. Students are donating them to the St. Vincent de Paul Society for people less fortunate.
"I always thought of the fact that Jesus came to serve, not to be served, and that's what we're trying to teach our students, also," said Pat Covitz, principal at DACS.
It's a message that hits home.
"It feels really good since this is a Catholic school," said fourth grader, Joseph Merill. "It's opening up your heart to God."
The students also showed their appreciation for service workers in the community by dressing up as people they respect. Fourth grader Donielle Kube dressed up as her favorite role model, her father.
"My dad's a doctor and my mom's an occupational therapist, and my dad teaches me a lot of stuff about being a doctor, so I decided to dress up like my dad," explained Donielle.
Service-oriented events will continue throughout the week in Catholic schools all over the country.
