Michigan dumps its state highway trash hot line.
LANSING, MICHIGAN (AP) -- Michigan plans to eliminate its highway trash hot line on Sunday.
The State Department of Transportation said Tuesday the hot line has outlived its usefulness.
The department says tips have decreased in recent years, and most of the remaining calls placed on the toll-free line have been unrelated to significant trash problems.
The phone line opened in 1988 as part of a strategy to reduce the amount of debris falling from uncovered commercial vehicles.
State officials began phasing out the hot line in 2006.
Motorists who want to report a significant trash problem on a state highway may call their local Michigan Department of Transportation service center. If the trash creates a driving danger, motorists may call 911.
