The source of the outbreak was a plant in Georgia
MARQUETTE -- The Food and Drug Administration has made headway in its investigation of the recent salmonella outbreak.
The FDA has traced the outbreak that's infected almost 500 people to a processing plant in Blakely, Georgia owned by Peanut Corporation of America.
Retailers like Super One and consumers were first alerted to the recall last week.
Since then, almost 20 companies have pulled their products off the shelves. The FDA warns it's not just peanut butter of which consumers should beware.
"Peanut Corporation of America produces a peanut paste, and they ship that paste for a commercial ingredient in cookies, ice cream, cereals, and candies. That commerically produced paste could be anywhere from a small container to a tanker truck size of peanut butter," said Fred Benzie with the Marquette County Health Department.
So far there have been six deaths related to the outbreak and 25 cases reported in Michigan.
