Bush Administration to remove them from the endangered list.
UPPER PENINSULA -- Gray wolves in the western Great lakes and the northern Rockies will soon be removed from the federal endangered species list.
The move, ordered by the Bush Administration, is expected to occur in late February.
The administration had tried previously to turn over control of wolves to state wildlife agencies, but the courts overruled those efforts.
The incoming Obama administration will get a chance to review the wolf plan, but it's not clear if the plan will be opposed.
The species was first listed as endangered in 1974. There are now an estimated 520 gray wolves in the Upper Peninsula.
