City Commission denied Harlow Park as the new skate park location.
MARQUETTE -- A new year, a new Marquette City Commission, and now, a new location must be found for the proposed skate plaza.
At last night's city commission meeting, in a four-to-two vote, the commission reversed a previous decision to designate Harlow Park as the location for a new skate plaza.
The Marquette area Skate Plaza Committee co-chair, Andrew Smentkowski, is disappointed with the commission's decision, which basically starts the process all over.
The Skate Plaza Committee has been working with the city for nearly two years, he says, and with an uncertain future, Smentkowski worried that the kids will lose interest.
"A lot of the kids have stopped coming to the meetings. They're really frustrated. This for many of them the first time they've been involved in a civic engagement process, and I just think they're baffled at the way decisions are made," said Andrew Smentkowski with the Skate Plaza Committee.
Now, the skate plaza is back in the hands of the planning commission.
They have 60 days to come up with alternative locations for the skate plaza for approval by the Marquette City Commission.
