Seniors put on their annual art exhibition.
MARQUETTE -- Visual Vibrations was the theme for this year's senior art exhibition at Northern Michigan University and there was a lot there to visualize. Students in the art and design program used a variety of media to create their artwork, but it took more than just talent to put on Friday night's show and reception. Students were not only responsible for creating their own artwork, they also had to put the exhibition together, which included everything from designing the lay-out to arranging for the entertainment.
In fact, it took most of the semester to bring the show to life.
"It's pretty labor-intensive and it takes a lot of organization and a lot of collaboration among the students," said Melissa Matuscak, director and curator for the De Vos Art Museum.
As for the artwork itself, much of that took even longer.
"It really is a labor of love," said graphic design artist Steve Mclain. "Most of the students, myself included, spent several months--even years--thinking about what it is they really want to do for this project."
Mclain used his talent to create a political piece called "Break Glass in Case of Emergency". His goal is to use his artwork to make a statement that gets people thinking.
"I really find a lot of benefit in helping other people with what I can do with my craft," he said.
Their passion is evident in their art.
"It's a lot of fun; it's refreshing to see what new ideas they come up with," Matuscak said.
