Conference helps EMTs practice their trade.
HOUGHTON -- Fifty-five emergency responders honed their skills at a critical care conference Wednesday in Houghton.
It's sponsored by the University of Michigan survival flight. The training included hands-on techniques like starting an IV in a baby's leg or putting a tube down a person's throat to create a rescue airway.
Medical professionals tested their skills on lifelike human simulators that breathe and respond if the procedure isn't done correctly.
"It's kind of eye opening for everybody because like I say, if you never ever do it, you've only ever assisted; now's the time to perform it and do it," stated David Roberts R.N. "You can do it over and over again until you do it right."
Wednesday's conference is the first time the University of Michigan survival flight team has conducted a conference in the U.P. and organizers hope to make it an annual event.
