A tug is scheduled to haul the E.M. Ford on Tuesday to a scrap yard in Sault Ste. Marie.
CARROLLTON TOWNSHIP, MI (AP) -- A freighter believed to be one of the oldest on the Great Lakes is being sold for scrap.
A tug is scheduled to haul the E.M. Ford on Tuesday to a scrap yard in Sault Ste. Marie.
The Ford was built in 1898 and has been tied up for a dozen years at the Lafarge North America Cement Plant docks in Saginaw County's Carrollton Township.
The company says it looked unsuccessfully for a historical group to take the ship.
But the Saginaw River Marine Historical Society says it learned of the ship's availability too late. Spokesman Don Morin tells the Bay City Times the ship's destruction will be a tragic loss.
Society members tell WJRT-TV they hope the scrap yard will give them some equipment from the ship before cutting it up.
