HOUGHTON -- The Michigan Tech student who was allegedly driving a car that crashed and killed a passenger in Chassell Township last month was arraigned in Houghton County Circuit Court Monday.

Nineteen-year-old William Lawrence Frantz of Grand Rapids is charged with one felony count of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, causing the death of 19-year-old Lee Drelles.

Drelles was also a Tech student.

The charge carries a maximum 15 years in prison.  Bail was set at 10 percent of $15,000.

"He has strong family ties," said defense attorney Don Martin of Frantz.  "His family is from the Lower Peninsula, the Grand Rapids area.  But I can guarantee that he's not going to be a flight risk."

Frantz posted bond after the arraignment.  His preliminary exam is scheduled for November 24.
