MARQUETTE TWP. -- A first-time event was held Saturday at the Noquemanon Forestville Trailhead in Marquette Township. "Ski and Shoe for the Cure" attracted over 30 local skiers and snowshoers.

They participated in short races to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis. The majority of everyone's registration fee is going to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The non-competitive race was spearheaded by 18-year-old Erin Mahaney, a snowshoer from Marquette who has the disease.

"Getting outside, especially up here in the U.P. with how beautiful it is, I mean, I can't imagine anyone wouldn't want to come out and just have a good time for a good cause," said Mahaney.

The event also included an auction and a raffle. Mahaney hopes to hold the event again next year.
