DETROIT (AP) -- A Detroit-based dog rescue group helped distribute about 7,000 pounds of dog and cat food in New York to those affected by Superstorm Sandy.

The Detroit News reports officials with the nonprofit Detroit Dog Rescue on Monday worked on Staten Island. They say the group Guardians of Rescue reached out to them for help.

Officials with Detroit Dog Rescue plan to return to Michigan on Tuesday to resume their local mission, including a food giveaway Dec. 1 at Detroit's Roosevelt Park.
