MARQUETTE -- It was a peaceful protest against gun violence in Marquette.

On Saturday, members from the Marquette Unitarian Universalist Congregation held up signs that read "Stop the Violence" and "Put Down the Guns".

The protesters say they would like to see more control over who gets guns by requiring a much more thorough background check.

They would also like to see more control over the number of guns in the United States.

"Even a small voice like this can reassure others who share this belief that they're not alone in this community, and it's okay to speak up," said Tim VanderVeen, spokesman for the group.

The group says they do not have a problem with hunting rifles used for sport.
