CALUMET -- Sixth graders from Washington Middle School, in Calumet, are adopting a beach.

With trash bags in hand, students lined the beach and started picking up cigarette butts, plastic, and food containers. Once the beach was clean, they made their way up to the park to pick up even more trash.

“It’s good to get them outside; it’s good to get them improving their community and realizing that they’re in charge of making sure things stay clean. We’re also making sure that they realize how much trash is being littered and remind people to clean up, so we’re not creating problems for the environment,” said Washington Middle School teacher, John Asiala.

Over 100 students separated and counted all of garbage. Last year they collected over 30 pounds of trash.
